Portrait Group
Over recent months we have enjoyed a rising demand to deliver opportunities to work with and photograph models in a controlled environment and with the guidance of experts.
We therefore present The Studio to take people photographs, maybe with experienced, established and professional models or with models just starting out and seeking to gain from OUR expertise.
The Studio meets on the THIRD Wednesday evening in of each month in the Wharf public house, Schooner Way, Cardiff Bay. When the natural light is against us we will be using artificial sources of studio flash and/or outdoor floodlights.
We regret that practical participation in these events is limited to paid up members of Cardiff Camera Club ~ although prospective members are welcome to come along and observe our activities. These sessions are ADDITIONAL to our regular schedule of events and therefore participants will be expected to make a modest contribution towards the expenses of the model. Details of our next session and the costs are at the bottom of this page.
There are two elements to our studio sessions:-
Portrait / Studio
Practical Photography
Your participation in the portrait studio session WILL incur a modest charge to meet the expenses of the models. The actual fee will vary depending upon the individual model, how far s/he has travelled to join us and her/his employment status (e.g. full time professional or hobbyist) but we try to set an upper limit of £5.
Photographing people in a studio type environment means that you REALLY need to understand at least the basics of your camera ~ particularly how to set manual exposures (ISO, aperture and shutter speed). If you dont have this knowledge please see the Practical Photography block > > > > > >
When the available light is against us we will use studio flash or outdoor floodlights ~ we provide a cable to go between your camera and our studio lights. You will need to either connect this cable to your camera in some way, or need to have an alternative means of triggering the studio lights. The various trigger methods could be a dedicated socket on your camera to connect to our cable (read your camera manual!) a hot-shoe adaptor socket that sits in your camera hot-shoe and provides a socket suitable for connecting to our studio lights (speak to our friends in Jessops or Jacobs) a manual external directable flashgun, an infra red trigger, a wireless trigger, your on-camera pop up flash is generally not suitable for the purpose
If you dont have one of the above please see the Practical Photography block > > > > >
There is no cost involved in coming along to pick our brains (not that you will find much!!) although if you move across to work with our model you wll need to contribute to his/her expenses.
Participation in The Studio will require knowledge of how to set your camera to work with our lighting and a means of triggering our lights. Equally, it is not all about working in studio conditions and you may be wishing to generally get to know your camera better and improve your skills.
Either way we CAN help but we need to know what you dont know and what you want to learn. So in a separate area we will have a simple knowledge base ... where you can come and get answers to YOUR questions. Members will be on hand to de-mystify some of the issues about setting your camera to work with our lights.
Bring your cameras and your instruction books (we dont know everything!!).
It is possible (and no more than possible) that we may have the necessary means available on loan for you to trigger our lights ... although we cannot guarantee it and would urge you to bring your own we havent failed yet to get somebodys kit working somehow ~ a list of suggested methods is in the Studio block < < < < <
